Volcan Azul Laurina: Naturally Low Caffeine
Volcan Azul is located on the edge of the Poás Volcano, where coffee has been planted on fertile soil since the mid-19th century. Alejo Castro Kahle is a passionate grower who has performed consistently at the Cup of Excellence, with rare varietals and meticulous processing.
The Laurina varietal naturally contains less than half of the caffeine of a regular arabica bean. For those who are sensitive to caffeine or just want to enjoy more coffee in a day, this is a way to do so without compromising on body or flavour. Fruity, nutty, and smooth, this coffee offers a wonderful profile with high sweetness.
TIP: We offer a subscription service that keeps you supplied with 2x 250g of our low caffeine coffee per month. Click here for more information.
We love this Laurina lot for its full, complex profile that does not compromise on flavour. Expect notes of poached pear, rich macadamia nut, shortbread, and vanilla. The coffee offers a deliciously smooth mouthfeel, enhanced by gentle natural processing.
The West Valley is Costa Ricas historical production region. Most of its coffees are grown under protective shade, and produced on fertile clay. The valleys landscape is structured by three volcanoes and a gentle tectonic depression. This privileged land on the Pacific Coast has well-defined dry and wet seasons.
Volcan Azul is located on the edges of the Poás Volcano. For 5 generations, the producers have continued making coffee with the objective in mind of achieving excellence and superior quality. The descendants of the founders families are acquiring natural tropical forest in order to protect and preserve the environment, and to reduce air contamination and global warming. It is their way of contributing to a better future for the generations to come.
The expert attention to detail from Alejo continues from farm to process. The Laurina cherries are hand selected when perfectly ripe: the sugar content is checked to ensure they are harvested at the best possible time. After sorting, the cherries are pulped and washed, removing the outside skin and mucilage of the coffee cherry. After fermentation, any remaining mucilage is removed through washing in clean water, before the beans are dried.
The tasting notes on the bag reads "poached pear", which I agree with. However, there is not much more complexity to the coffee beyond that. I have tried both perculation and immersion brewing, and at a variety of temperatures and brew times, and I do not seem to find more interesting notes. But! I recently discovered that it works excellently in homemade blends.
